MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON
I can’t quite believe that we are approaching the end of another school year – the time has absolutely flown by! The children are still working incredibly hard and really enjoying their learning, with trips, visitors and some fantastic pieces of work. I am incredibly proud of all of them.
I am also really aware that we have been asking a lot from parents just recently with all the fundraising activities. We didn’t intend on having everything so close together, but the arrival of Ofsted meant a few things ended up being postponed. I would like to say a huge thank you for all the contributions you have made and to reassure you that there are no plans for any further fundraising for the rest of this year. The final day is usually a non-uniform day, with a contribution of £1 towards PTA funds, but we will not be asking for the £1 contribution this year.

STAFFING NEWS
We were thrilled to welcome Mrs Jones as the newest member of our lunchtime team after the half term holiday – she has already settled in well.
Sadly, we will be saying goodbye to one of our HLTAs, Mrs Barnes, at the end of this school year, as she retires to spend some more time working on her other hobbies and interests. She is an amazing photographer, so we look forward to her sharing some of her work with us! We have appointed one of our LSAs, Mrs Terry, as an HLTA from September. She has been training to do the role this year with us, so we know she will do a great job.
Mrs Morris, who currently works in our office, will also be moving across to the LSA team from September. This was a role she did in a previous school, so we are looking forward to being able to use her skills in this way. We are in the process of appointing a new member of the office team to take her place.

SUPERSTARS
We had such an exciting time for our ‘Superstars’ PTA fundraising afternoon in the last week of May. Once again, the event was a great success, with the children all having an amazing time taking part in each of the events. Thank you to the staff and to the PTA for all of their hard work, and to all the parents who came along to support us and to enjoy the afternoon with us. I am very pleased to report that we managed to raise £2,547! Well done everyone!

GUIDE DOG FUNDRAISING EVENT
Our School Council also did a fantastic job in the first week of this half term in organising our Guide Dog fundraising event. They worked extremely hard running the activities on the playground each day. Thank you also to the House Captains who helped to set up and run our sensory trail. Lots of fun was had by all! Thank you to all those children who collected and brought in sponsor money and for all the support with the cake sale. Totalling everything up, we managed to raise a magnificent £7004.

INSET DAYS FOR 2023 - 2024
We have set our INSET days for next academic year, matching the INSET days for Fairfield. They will be:
- Friday 1st September
- Monday 30th October
- Tuesday 2nd January
- Monday 19th February
- Friday 21st June
|
|
WARM WEATHER
During this period of hot weather, please can we remind parents to apply sun cream to children before they come into school. It is also good for the children to have a hat/cap to wear at break times. Please also ensure your child has their water bottle with them every day.
|
|
SPORTS DAY
An email came out last week about Sports Day, which is on Thursday 29th June. Parents are invited to join us for the whole day on this day (or as much of it as they would like!) The morning events (a carousel of sporting challenges in which all children take part) will start at 9:30am. There will be a break at 12:30pm for lunch, to which we invite parents and supporters to stay and enjoy a picnic lunch with the children on the field. Rather than preparing hot meals we have arranged with HC3S to prepare picnic bags, which will be available to order on the day. The afternoon events will begin at 1:30pm after a 15 minute clear up and activity set up time. School will end at the usual time of 3:30pm.

|
END OF YEAR CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY
As you may know, every Friday we have a celebration assembly where we celebrate all the good things our children have been involved in, both in and out of school and hand out the awards and achievements for the week. For our final celebration assembly, on Friday 21st July, where we will be handing out awards and achievements for the year, we would like to invite parents to join us. In order to create enough space for parents, we will be holding two assemblies:
- Year 3 and Year 4 at 9:15am
- Year 5 and Year 6 at 10:15am
We hope you can join us to help celebrate the children’s achievements! You will be notified by email if your child is receiving a special award.

YEAR 3 NEWS
Year 3 had a fantastic trip to Butser Ancient Farm - they all behaved beautifully and were a credit to the school. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities we took part in and discovered so much about the Stone Age; hopefully you heard all about it! Our classrooms are rapidly turning into Stone Age museums, with all the wonderful roundhouses being brought in for homework! We have loved celebrating and sharing these with our classes. Over the next few weeks, we will start sending these home; as much as we would love to keep them on display, we are rapidly running out of room and need to make space for new homework creations that are being brought in by the children.

|
On Thursday, the children were treated to a Spanish afternoon organised by Mrs Baker. We were delighted to see the children trying the different foods on offer... perhaps packed lunches will start taking on a Spanish twist!
Year 3 have shown resilience and positivity; working hard in their maths and reading assessments, and responding positively to the news that we will be creating new classes ready for year 4. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to make new friends across the year group, and we look forward to seeing their peer choices as they return their forms. A gentle reminder that the deadline for this is the 27th June.
There are lots of exciting events coming up over the next few weeks, and we look forward to sharing these with your children. Fingers crossed the weather continues to be kind, it has certainly felt like the summer term!

YEAR 4 NEWS
The highlight this month has been how we have absolutely immersed ourselves in our gardening project. We have loved being outside for an afternoon every week, (come rain or shine!) on a rotation of activities; weeding, planting, upcycling and creating as well as researching one plant. We are really beginning to understand how biodiversity works and how each ecosystem benefits from having a variety of insects and plants. We cannot wait to harvest everything we have grown, which we hope to be cooking with next month.

YEAR 5 NEWS
What a fantastic start to this half term year 5 have had so far. The children have been continuing to research lots of information and interesting facts about volcanoes for our geography topic this term, and are now preparing to present their work. We have a visit to St Faith's Church for our RE topic coming up, which is enquiring whether the church is a sacred place. We are currently casting and beginning to rehearse for our production of 'Bombed Out!' which you are all kindly invited to come and watch on Friday 14th July.

YEAR 6 NEWS
Year 6 have had another busy month. We had our end of SATs waterfight which everyone enjoyed. All Year 6 classes are very competitive so it was full on drenching. Mrs Robinson and Mr Adam joined in the fun. Many children (and adults) had fun dousing them with water.
Everyone had fun supporting the Guide Dogs events. The children took part in a sensory trail for which they were sponsored. Games and cakes were also available to take part in or buy. We have raised lots of money for this very worthy cause.
We had a visit from the Money People who talked to the children about all aspects of money, taxes, savings and its origins. This stood the children in good stead for their Fiver Challenge event. Small groups are given £5 to invest in a business idea. It is then their job to make profits on selling items either bought or made. We would like to thank all parents for helping the children source merchandise. We will report on how this event fared next month.

MEET THE STAFF
Mrs Holly Jordan-Norris
What is your role?
Learning Support Assistant
Where do you find me?
Currently in Year 5
When did you join Bosmere?
I started as a parent helper when my children were students here back in 2013. I joined Bosmere as an LSA in 2017.
|
|
What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time I love spending time with my children and husband. We like to travel, go to theme parks (I always scream when I go on really big rides), or go to London to watch musicals. I help run sessions at Dynamo Youth Theatre in Havant and even do hair and makeup for all of our shows. I also enjoy spending time in my garden colouring and soaking up the sun.
Interesting fact about you: I have two children Hannah (19) and Owen (17); they both attended Bosmere. I come from the state of Maine in the USA which is the top most eastern state right near Canada, but I've lived in England for about 20 years. I grew up on an island that is about the same size as the Isle of Wight. I have lived in 3 countries - USA, Australia and England. As many of you know I really enjoy making people jump....it really makes me laugh. I've even scared Mrs Robinson just by sitting at my desk in Room 5. LOL!

ECO NEWS
Transport : Clean Air Day 15th June
HCC are running a competition for school children to write a Clean Air Day Pledge about how to tackle air pollution. Eco Club watched a powerpoint, thinking about how we can reduce car emissions to tackle air pollution. This was then shared across the whole school and each of the 12 classes is working on a Clean Air Pledge to enter into the competition.

Water
Portsmouth Water Company gave us copies of a booklet with information and activities for schools all about how we use water and how we can save it, especially in this hot weather. We looked at how much water we use at home for various different activities like taking a shower, cleaning our teeth, or running the washing machine, relating each one to the amount of water contained in a plastic milk bottle. Then we looked at how much water is typically used per person at home; it’s a lot!

Havant Big Green Week Art Competition
Eco Club member, Samantha (4S) was a winner with her 'There is no Plan B' 3D creation (shown below), along with two other groups of pupils (who are not in Eco Club). Prizes of small gardening sets were presented to the winners in whole school assembly on 19th June.
The whole of Bosmere won a prize too for our Book Week class collages* - a bug hotel. We assembled it and positioned it next to our Eco vegetable garden, with thanks to Mr Moore for his assistance. We hope this will provide a safe haven for some of our garden pollinators as well as spiders and other bugs.
(* Our 12 class collages are currently on display upstairs in the Meridian Centre. For photos click here.)

Biodiversity
To mark World Bee Day on 20th May, Eco Club watched a video highlighting the importance of bees in pollinating more than 75% of the world's food crops and how humans are impacting on their survival. Then we watched an RSPB video about creating simple water baths for wildlife. We collected small branches from the copse, put them in two shallow trays filled with water, and positioned them on the grass, visible from the classrooms. We have already seen birds using them to drink and take a bath, and they are teeming with minibeasts – mostly mosquito larvae - so we have created our very own micro habitats! For more photos click here.
The tomato plants we planted in our Eco Garden just before half term now have flowers and everything is looking very healthy and growing well. Eco Club have been keeping them watered and weeded during this warm weather. Hopefully we will be harvesting tomatoes later in the year! Click here for more photos.

We have more exciting Eco Club trips and activities planned for the rest of this term!

LIBRARY NEWS
Super Eco Hero Comic Strip Competition
We had some superb entries and all pupils received awards of house points, Head Teacher’s Awards or book prizes. The overall joint winners were Alfie E in 4R and Lila B in 4S who both produced some imaginative and very colourful eco stories; Alfie’s was about tackling air pollution, while Lila focused on caring for plants. Click here for more competition photos.

E-SAFETY TIPS - Omegle
Please find a link below to an information sheet about the app 'Omegle'. Omegle is a free online chat site that lets users speak with others without the need to register. It randomly pairs users in one-on-one chat sessions where they chat anonymously. Omegle has been the subject to a variety of e-safety concerns including discrimination, pornography and exploitation of children. Omegle is available in the app stores and through web browsers. We have had a recent e-Safety issue which has highlighted the need for parents to carefully monitor which apps their children use on their devices.
