MESSAGE FROM MRS ROBINSON
We made it to the last week of term, and what a term it has been, with so many exciting things squeezed in, particularly over the last few weeks! I was so proud of the children for their singing and readings at the Carol Service at the church at the start of December, and it was wonderful to be able to welcome parents into the church to share in this special event. We have also enjoyed sharing our year group performances with parents in school – the children have really done themselves proud learning their lines and delivering them so confidently. Levels of excitement have been high but the children deserve to be very proud of the way they have tackled all of this alongside their usual learning. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Bosmere families a Happy Christmas!

STAFFING NEWS
This half term we have welcomed quite a few new members of staff:
- Mrs Browne joined us as an LSA in Year 5
- Miss De Stains joined us as an LSA in Year 3
- Miss Wilson joined us as a Lunchtime Supervisor
They have all quickly slotted into their roles, playing an important part in our Bosmere team!

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING
Thank you to everyone who helped us raise a magnificent total of £328.29 to support those affected by cancer. The children really enjoyed buying and eating all of the delicious cakes which were brought in!
|
|
POPPY APPEAL
Thank you also to everyone for supporting our Poppy Appeal. We raised £177.09.

CHRISTMAS PTA FUNDRAISING
Once again our Christmas fundraising has been a success with the children, really enjoying parents and grandparents coming into school to see their performances. Thank you to everyone for supporting us. The Secrets Rooms were very successful and we hope you like the presents chosen for you by your child! I know they really enjoyed choosing their gifts and wrapping them for you.
The performance photos which were ordered through ParentMail are being emailed out to your chosen email address this week. Please contact the school office on Friday if you believe you ordered a photo but have still not received it.
The raffle prize draw took place in assembly on 11th December. All winners have been contacted by phone / email. As usual, lots of local businesses supported the raffle and we would like to say a huge thank you to:-
Waitrose, Tesco, Salon Dolly, Greene King (The Royal Oak), Domino’s,
Hayling Light Railway, Hayling Fair, Stansted House, Station Café, Farmfoods,
Victorious Festival, Horizon Centre.
Without the support from these businesses, our raffle would not have been so successful. We really do appreciate it.
As yet we do not know the grand total from all of our Christmas fundraising, but will let you know when the PTA have finished counting all the money!

|
REVERSE ADVENT CALENDAR
Thank you so much for all the support you have given so far with our Reverse Advent Calendar. We have boxes brimming with goodies to donate to the Beacon Church Foodbank. We have now stopped collecting donations.
|
|
CHRISTMAS DINNER
Our school Christmas Dinner will take place on Friday 15th December. The form has now closed. If you have not pre-ordered a Christmas dinner for your child, please send them with a packed lunch on that day.
|
|
CHRISTMAS JUMPER DAY
The last day of the Autumn Term, Friday 15th December, will be a non-uniform day and an opportunity for children to dress up in their Christmas jumpers. As previously, this will be a PTA fundraising day and we ask that children bring in a £1 donation for taking part.

YEAR 3 NEWS
It has been a very busy half term for Year 3!
There has been so much learning going on. In maths, we have explored fractions, telling the time and using coins and notes ready to spend some money over the festive period! In writing, the children have written some excellent letters to Greenpeace, Erol (Santa's chief elf) and of course, Father Christmas himself! We loved reading the book 'Dear Father Christmas, get well soon’, written by Alan Durant, to inspire our writing. We would definitely recommend this book to share at home! We have been super scientists! Year 3 have learned all about digestion and set up an experiment to see what kind of drinks damage our teeth the most. We have been studying William Morris and exploring his wonderful art work. The children have experimented with a range of art materials to recreate Morris' natural and floral designs.
There has been many festivities happening this half term too! Year 3 loved singing at the carol concert at St Faith's, performing our Christmas extravaganza and having an advent experience at the Church. We shopped till we dropped at the secrets room. Thank you very much for all the donations - we raised lots of money for the PTA!
We have a lot to look forward to next half term! We are counting down the sleeps till our Ancient Egyptian day. We are so excited to travel back in time and immerse ourselves in all things Ancient Egyptian. We have lots of fun science investigations coming up exploring solids, liquids and gases, and we start a new English unit of writing instructions.
The Year 3 team would like to thank parents and families for their continued support. We wish the Year 3 families and children a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you in 2024!

YEAR 4 NEWS
Year 4 have had an incredibly busy end to the autumn term. All three classes have recently enjoyed DT days making Roman Chariots as well as art sessions making clay oil lamps. The children have thoroughly enjoyed these creative opportunities and we have been very impressed with their skills. Our highly anticipated PSHE sessions on 'growing up' are now complete. The children have shown maturity and empathy towards each other, learning together in their classes about the changes boys and girls will experience as they go through puberty; hopefully your children have been sharing their knowledge with you at home.
Not surprisingly, the Nativity has been a huge part of this half term. A big thank you to the families who have supported their children with learning their lines and lyrics from the songs. A big thank you too for the costumes and props that have been sent in - we couldn't have done this without you! A lot of time and effort has gone into producing a performance the children can be proud of, and we are looking forward to sharing this with you.
As we head towards the Christmas holidays, a little plea to continue reading regularly with your child and practise times tables. The children absolutely deserve a break, and we know that lots of you will have festive plans, but a little bit of time spent on these will make a difference. A reminder that all children continue to have access to TTR, MyMaths and Oxford Owl. Times Tables Mountain and Hit the Button are popular games that can be accessed online too.
We would like to take this opportunity to tell you how proud we are of Year 4 - it's hard to believe we are a third of the way through the year already, but we have lots to look forward to.
Wishing you all a happy and healthy Christmas. We look forward to welcoming your children back in January.

YEAR 5 NEWS
What a fantastic term Year 5 have had. We have been learning all about Space! All the children in the year group have worked really well in teams to compile projects on Space. They used their creativity and skills to make posters, top trump cards, models, PowerPoints, plus much more. We were very impressed with the quality of teamwork and work that the children put together. They all showed bundles of resilience as well, which was this half term's focus value! We are very appreciative of the support that we received from families, friends and staff for our Space presentation event.
Year 5 have also been learning all about the Mayans. Each class has worked together to create our end of year production 'Living like a Mayan'. The children worked well as teams to learn lines, create Mayan headdresses, learn Mayan songs, and put their acting skills to the test by becoming a Mayan. The children have really enjoyed learning where Mayans come from, how they lived, what they ate, what they believed in, and how they were different from or the same as them.
The Year 5 team have been so impressed with how well the children have settled into Year 5. We are looking forward to the Spring Term where we will have fresh topics and more exciting experiences.

YEAR 6 NEWS
This term, Year 6 have been learning about the life and works of Charles Dickens. They performed their plays on Dickens' life and 'A Christmas Carol' to parents, and we very proud of how they learned their lines and conquered their nerves to give an amazing performance. Working in small groups, the children have also spent time creating posters, presentations and drawings to share with the year group on Charles Dickens. This type of project based learning (PBL) gives children the opportunity to learn teamworking and presentation skills, and they have all risen to the challenge wonderfully.
A big thank you to all parents who provided gifts for our Secrets Room and the Reverse Advent Calendar, plus helping the children learn their lines and put together a Victorian costume. It's been a busy month!

MEET THE STAFF – Tina Emery
What role: Sports Coach, HLTA and Caretaker
Where do you find me: Everywhere, usually in shorts!
When: I've worked at Bosmere for 16 years and had lots of different roles.
What do you like to do in your spare time: I enjoy playing football, Parkrun and spending time with my family.
Quirky fact: I used to play for Portsmouth Ladies Football Club and I have broken a Guinness World Record.
|
|
MEET THE GOVERNOR:
Martin Polisczcuk
Background: I live in Havant where I moved from London in 1999 with my wife and 2 girls. I was born and raised in Bedhampton, attended Barncroft, Broomfield (now Park Community), Highbury Tech and then university in Leicester. I worked in Sales for IBM in London for many years and am now retired. Having time to spend in the community, I started volunteering in Bosmere in 2015, largely in Year 4.
|
|
Interests: I enjoy pretty much all sports but especially cricket, rugby and football. I love travelling, musical theatre, history and old(ish) films. And I really enjoy working with children. I find that their honesty, humour and determination to thrive keep me grounded and energised.
Why I became a Governor: I became a Governor in 2016 where, in addition to my in-school work, I could help to support Bosmere in its vision, ethos and strategic direction. Of course you can do those things by working in the classrooms, but as a Governor you get much more involved in the detail. In our monitoring roles, you get to directly support the leaders and staff by bringing your working and life experiences into the school, providing that independent oversight.
My current roles on the Governing body and what they involve: In addition to being part of the governing body, I chair the School Support Committee (looking at attendance, behaviour and wellbeing), and I am on the Curriculum and Achievement Committee. I link with Year 5, am the Governor Subject Lead for History, and I regularly drive the school minibus.

Reminder about our online library resources – so you have plenty to read over Christmas!
Everyone at Bosmere has access to online resources including eBooks, eComics and eMagazines, through SORA and the Hampshire School Library Service.
|
|
We can borrow up to 2 resources at a time, to read or listen to at school or at home. Research has shown that reluctant readers in particular often find eBooks an attractive format to use. All SLS eBooks, audiobooks, eComics and eMagazines are age-restricted into categories to ensure only the appropriate content can be viewed, and on the SORA app, pupils will only be able to borrow the books appropriate to their age range. There is unlimited access to magazines, meaning any number of users can borrow a single title at one time; they do not count towards the number of books allowed out on loan. Comic titles are also unlimited, however they will count towards a user's total number of 2 loans allowed.
For guidance on how to access SORA, visit the Library page on the Bosmere website here.

Hants Illustrated Book Award
The winner of the 2023 Hampshire Illustrated Book Award was ‘The Station Cat’ written and illustrated by Stephen Hogtun.
The Year 5 pupils enjoyed the opportunity to analyse and compare the shortlisted books and voted overwhelmingly for this worthy winner!
|
|
New ‘How Are You Feeling?’ section in the Library
We now have a selection of books focussing on wellbeing, mindfulness, and emotions which can all be borrowed from the library. Plus a stock of ‘Happy Space’ books which are free to anyone who wants one – ask Mrs Library Dunn. ‘Let’s start an epidemic of happiness’ (happyspace.org.uk) Happy Space is a charity with a mission to prevent mental health issues from arising wherever possible.

ECO NEWS
Southern Water Trough
On 31st Oct, Eco Club helped Southern Water to plant up a huge trough outside the conservatory which will be watered using rain water directed from the roof gutters above via a new rainwater pipe. Eco Club were shown how to choose the best place for each plant, how to dig a hole the correct size, and then to carefully transfer the plant from its pot into the hole. We finished off by installing in amongst the plants an unusual new bug house, kindly donated by Ms Carew. For more photos click here.
With thanks to Southern Water for donating the trough, compost and plants, and for their time in guiding Eco Club through the process of planting.

Southern Electrical Recycling
Southern Electrical Recycling visited Bosmere to promote our Eco project for November to collect small, electrical devices which are no longer needed or don't work, so that they can be recycled. The children were excited to see the brightly coloured WEEE man (himself made out of recycled materials) with his information display screen explaining what the scheme is all about. Over the month, we collected loads of devices which will now be dismantled, so useful materials can be extracted and recycled, rather than adding to landfill.
With thanks to SER for their support with this project. (southernelectricalrecycling.co.uk)

Willow and Tissue Paper Lanterns
Eco Club were invited by The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre to take part in a festive lantern parade in Havant. So we spent 4 lunchtime sessions creating nine amazing lanterns:
Week 1 – we made the basic willow structure using willow withies pruned from the Bosmere willow dome, held together using masking tape.
Week 2 - we carefully wound fairy lights around the willow structure.
Week 3 - we stuck white tissue paper to the willow frame as a background cover.
Week 4 - we finished with festive decorations in coloured tissue paper.
On 30th November, several Eco Club members paraded with their handmade lanterns along East Street from The Spring to St Faith's Church for the official turning on of the church Christmas tree lights by Havant's Mayor. Click here for more photos.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all our enthusiastic Eco Club Members!

E-SAFETY TIP – Sharing Photos Online
One of the more heart-warming, life-affirming aspects of social media is being able to share special moments in our children’s lives with family and friends: from the first day at school or blowing out birthday cake candles, to smiling holiday selfies and cute Christmas costumes. Is there, however, such a thing as too much sharing – and can it actually put children in danger?
With potential risks such as accidentally displaying identifying details (images showing where a child lives or what school they go to, for example) and photos being seen and saved by strangers, perhaps we need to take a little more caution over what we post and where we post it. This guide runs through some safety considerations when sharing images:

WELLBEING TIP
Why Bother With Breakfast?
Breakfast is a great way to give the body the fuel it needs and kick-starts the body's metabolism. Kids who eat breakfast tend to eat healthier overall and are more likely to be physically active
Skipping breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless, or irritable. In the morning, their bodies need to refuel for the day ahead. Their mood and energy can drop by midmorning if they don't eat something for breakfast.
Breakfast Brain Power
It's important for kids to have breakfast every day, but what they eat in the morning is important too. To boost nutrition, choose breakfast foods that are rich in whole grains, fruits or vegetables, and protein while low in added sugar.
Making Breakfast Happen
It can be hard to make a healthy breakfast when you're rushing to get yourself and the kids ready in the morning. These suggestions may help:
· Get everyone up 10 minutes earlier.
· Have grab-and-go alternatives such as fresh fruit; a small tub of low-sugar cereal; yogurt or smoothies or even digestive biscuits.
· If kids aren't hungry first thing in the morning, pack a breakfast that they can eat a little later on.
The morning meal doesn't have to be all about traditional breakfast items. You can mix it up to include different foods and still provide the nutrients and energy kids need for the day. You could try:
· Non-chocolate cereal with low-fat milk topped with fruit
· Half a whole-grain bagel topped with peanut butter and fresh fruit (banana or apple wedges)
· Breakfast smoothie (low-fat milk or yogurt, fruit, whirled in a blender)
· Omelette/scrambled eggs with brown or half-and-half toast
Don't forget how important your good example is. Let your kids see you making time to enjoy breakfast every day. You need to kick start your day too!
